Mummy Tummy Be Gone Wk.8 – Winter Laziness

I am very disappointed and ashamed to admit that winter laziness hit me hard this week. I had very little motivation and just wanted to sleep/nap as much as possible.

Did you know that there is a reason a lot of us get hit with the lazies during winter? Light and dark are responsible for how much Melatonin we produce. Melatonin is the hormone that gets us ready for sleep. So when it is naturally darker during winter our bodies produce more Melatonin making us sleepy.  There is another factor too РSunlight. In certain people, the lack of sunlight in the winter seems to trigger depression. Symptoms include bad moods, difficulty making and keeping friends, overeating, tiredness and sleeping too much. Research suggests that sunlight stimulates the Pineal Gland in the brain to produce certain chemicals such as Serotonin  which is a Tryptamine. These chemicals improve our mood.

This week for me was a vicious spiral downwards. It started with just feeling a little tired so a nanny nap was needed. Turning into two nanny naps a day. Then looking for ways to get out of doing housework. Then spending half the day cuddled up to DD on the couch under a blanky. The one positive this week was that doing the Gratitude Challenge kept me from sinking into depression. I am trying not to be too hard on myself for falling in to such bad habits this week but i do need a kick up the backside and who better to do it than me.

How i plan to beat Winter laziness

Now what do i do about this? The first thing i have done is gone back to where this all began and reminded myself why i am doing this. Reading my first few blogs on Mummy Tummy Be Gone really helped me to find my focus again. Next is finding ways to beat the winter laziness. Here is my plan –

  • Add stretches to my morning routine
  • Spend a minimum of 10 minutes outside regardless of how cold it is
  • Go to bed earlier and try and get a good night sleep, waking more refreshed
  • Add some winter warming comfort food to our menu, food prep is great exercise and a mood enhancer for me
  • Use essential oils like peppermint, lemon and grapefruit to keep me energised

The one thing i have learnt over the past 8 weeks is that although i have great motivation i do struggle with keeping on track. Do you have any suggestions? this is my next challenge to beat.

As you know i had a terrible week and it really reflects on the chart. Weight gain, lowest ever step count and a gain in cms (chart says 2 but it is +2).
